Many parents can still remember going to the local arcade and dropping 25 cents on Pac-man, Galaga, and Dig Dug. They were simple 2-dimensional games that had no story line or expansive plot. This didn't stop many of us from spending our entire allowence, but eventually you went home.
In contrast, modern videogames are designed with intreaguing and story lines and exansive worlds. Even simple games are made with addictive type mechanisms and challenges to ensure they quickly hook the player.
Experts agree that these are critical years for children to develop emotionally as well as formative years for lifelong fitness and studying habits. When left unchecked, children can spend hours engaged with a screen and ignoring other aspects of life.
Most parents rely on setting time limits on for their children’s playtime, but this is often a burden to enforce and still results in conflict when it’s time to shut things down. Pleas for more time or the classic “just one more level” often result in an answer that is not satisfactory to either party.
